Durban - KwaZulu-Natal's health department hopes to have a new head of department by August, the province's health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said on Friday.

Dhlomo, who was addressing the province's health portfolio committee in Durban, said: "Saturday is the last day to apply for the post of HoD. We hope to shortlist candidates by the end of the month."

The department has not had a full-time department head since August last year when the five-year term of Dr Sibongile Zungu ended.

She was due to be reappointed, but the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) complained to the Premier Senzo Mchunu. The union accused her of corruption, mismanagement and alienating the workforce.

She was appointed on a month-to-month basis pending the outcome of an inquiry ordered by Mchunu.

At the end of March she was told that her contract would not be renewed and she failed in a Labour Court bid to be reappointed.

Dr Lindiwe Millicent Similane is the current acting head of department. She was previously head of clinical services in the department.

It was Zungu's alleged illegal appointment of the suspended Gauteng health chief financial officer Ndoda Biyela that has seen the department making the headlines in recent weeks.
