Durban - Paramedics in KwaZulu-Natal are on high alert after the near drowning of two children at a public swimming pool in Gamalahke, near Port Shepstone on Thursday.

This is the latest in a string of drowning-related incidents as a heat wave sweeps across South Africa.

KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said medics were alerted to the incident at the pool but arrived to find that the children had already been rushed to hospital in a private vehicle where their condition was not known.

He said the incident raised an important point.

"With the heat wave that we are currently experiencing and it being school holidays, many children have taken to the water to cool off and pass the time. This has resulted in EMS responding to several drowning-related incidents in the past few days," he said.

McKenzie offered the following water safety tips:

- Do not leave children unsupervised when playing in water or swimming;

- Do not enter the water if you can’t swim, as drownings can occur even in shallow water;

- At the beach, only swim where there are life guards on duty;

- Swim only in the marked areas and listen to the life guards’ instructions as they know which areas are dangerous.
