Johannesburg - A policeman was jailed for life by the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Durban on Friday for killing his girlfriend, the Independent Complaints Directorate said.

Constable Thabane Dube, 29, shot Zodwa Shongwe dead in front of her 2-year-old son in the Kenville informal settlement in March 2009, spokesperson Moses Dlamini said.

"Dube was arrested on the night of the murder and kept in custody since then," Dlamini said.

He was convicted on a murder charge in December last year after several court appearances.

The motive for the murder was not known.

'For life' in this country has no meaning really. Three four years from now some president will decide to 'pardon' our man and then he will freely carry on with his 'life' This is just how it is..... and nobody takes notice
