Johannesburg - A man pleaded guilty on Wednesday to raping his 82-year-old neighbour in New Hanover in KwaZulu-Natal.

Avelo Tuswa, 25, made his plea in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg.

In his testimony, Tuswa said he was under the influence of alcohol when he committed the crime.

He said he was walking past the pensioner's home when he noticed that the door was left open. He threatened the pensioner before raping her.

A doctor's report confirmed the pensioner suffered serious injuries.

Tuswa would be back in the same court on Thursday.
