Pietermaritzburg - A KwaZulu-Natal man has received a 25-year jail sentence for raping a 7-year-old girl in KwaMagqaza near Melmoth, police said on Friday.

Vusi Thembani Mthimkhulu, 35, appeared at Eshowe Regional Court on Tuesday, police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said.

In August last year, the little girl was playing outside her home in KwaMagwaza.

“When her friends went to join her they found her laying on the floor naked with Mthimkhulu next to her. They alerted her grandmother who called the police and Mthimkhulu fled the scene,” Zwane said.

A case of rape was opened at Melmoth police station and the docket was transferred to Eshowe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

Mthimkhulu was arrested and charged for rape. He appeared in court several times and on Tuesday was convicted and sentenced.

“This is a victory, not only for the SAPS, but for all vulnerable women and children in this country. The court could not have passed a more fitting sentence and this will certainly send out a strong message to other criminals,” said the KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
