KZN man killed at taxi rank

2013-04-19 17:03

Durban - A man was shot dead and another wounded when four men opened fire at the Ballito taxi rank, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

"Four armed unknown men fired shots at a vehicle that was parked at the Boulevard shopping centre on Thursday afternoon," Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.

A 27-year-old passer-by died on the scene, and another man was wounded.

Police were investigating a case of murder and attempted murder. No arrests had been made.

Provincial community safety spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said the shooting was believed to be linked to a dispute between two local rival taxi associations.

Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu condemned the shooting.

"No amount of violence and intimidation can bring stability and resolve problems in the [taxi] industry."

He said there appeared to be a new wave of killings in the KwaDukuza taxi industry. Last month two people were shot and wounded in Ballito.

"We have started processes as a department to intervene and resolve their dispute," Mchunu said.
