KZN municipality has highest murder rate

2013-01-24 14:34

Johannesburg - The Richmond local municipality in KwaZulu-Natal has the highest murder rate in the country, at 192 per 100 000 people, the SA Institute of Race Relations said on Thursday.

A survey conducted by SAIRR showed that Richmond's murder rate was six times that of the national rate of 31 murders per 100 000 people in the 2011/2012.

Two municipalities also had murder rates much higher than the national rate.

These were Sundays River Valley, in the Eastern Cape, with 178, and Victor Khanye local municipality, in Mpumalanga, with 177.

The SAIRR surveyed the murder rates of all 278 local municipalities in the year 2011/2012.

SAIRR researcher Kerwin Lebone said the three municipalities with the highest murder rates stood out in terms of limited access to police stations and courts of law, relative to the size of their areas.

"Richmond local municipality has one police station per 314km² and one court per 628km².

"Sundays River Valley has one police station per 999km² and one court per 5 994km²," he said.

In Victor Khanye local municipality, there was a police station for every 224km² and a court for every 784km².

Access to justice

By contrast, Johannesburg's murder rate was 29, and it had a police station every 37km² and a court every 103km². In Cape Town, the murder rate was 36, and it had a police station every 42km² and a court every 122km².

Lebone said there was not a particularly strong correlation between crime and socio-economic problems such as unemployment and poverty in the areas with the highest murder rates.

SAPS research had shown that around 80% of murders occurred between people who know each other, said Lebone.

"The information presented by the institute suggests that some squabbles may be prevented from deteriorating into murders in areas with better access to justice.

"Easy access to police stations and law courts to resolve such disputes may prove to be important in preventing more serious crimes," he said.

    Shocking!!!!

      thandiwe.ngema.71 - 2013-01-24 15:12

Indeed it is.. Looking at the area by area stats it seems there are some incredibly safe areas of SA and some places reminiscent of a warzone at the other end of the scale.. It is shocking that 80& of murders are between people who know each other.. Don't make friends with nutters! A hell of a lot more work to do for SAPS that is for sure!

      chez.kri - 2013-01-24 15:33

@Thandiwe. Actually that percentage is lower here than the rest of the world. It sounds bad at 80% but it is a lot easier to solve murders in other countries where over 90% of murders are by people the victim knows. 80% is bad because the motive - and therefore the suspect - is harder to find.

  • Roger.D.Fraser - 2013-01-24 15:11

Maybe our SAP & Government should go to New York .They have their lowest rate of murder in decades and it has gone down year on year to 5.6 per 100K . http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2012/nov/30/new-york-crime-free-day-deadliest-cities-worldwide#data .Considering that New York is about half the population of our entire country that is a pretty impressive statistic .

There is the old saying Lies Damn lies and statistics! I live in the Sunday's River and we do not have incidences of murder every second day! We have a huge influx of seasonal workers and there are incidences of murder yes but what the staticians have done here is correlate the ration against our much lower "permanent" population instead of the population figures for when the seasonal workers are here! We don't have a murder every two days!

Really sad. Black on black violence. Just when are we likely to become civilised, and stop killing each other. Your goat came into my garden and ate my cabbage - I kill you. EISH

What happened to @sango.jika's comment? Come on news 24 - it was classic - here is part of it This is nothing compared to the world just google the most dangerouse cities in the world. You'll make SA look like its a bad country there's cities that got high muder rate like de troit in the USA and some cities in MAXICO. Sango my friend - Limpompo education ha ha But really murder is a serious business - law and order spiralling down into nothingness - Life imitating art........

      angelanair3 - 2013-01-24 16:39

Ah sanjo - you back - but come on dont deny us our right to be known as the new murder capital of the world - and did you know we excel at rape as well? I dont blame you - you are a true patriot - but a patriot in denial.....

  • amanda.matthews.14811 - 2013-01-24 18:13

KZN? Not surprised. The lower the IQ of the majority of the population, the higher the murder rate. Aside from that do not forget the burlaries, car highjackings, vicious assaults, taxi violence, general lawlessness. Thats why I left.

  • graham.radburnd - 2013-01-24 19:55

Just to give those stats a comparitive look. The Province of Canterbury in New Zealand had 6 murders in 2012. The population of Canterbury is 559,000, (June 2012 figs.). All 6 murderers were caught. 3 pleaded guilty, the remaining 3 cases are before the Courts. Those charged with murder are kept in jail, not released on bail as in SA. 3 of the victims were woman, and all of the victims knew their murderer.

  • amanda.matthews.14811 - 2013-01-24 20:01

@cow.fish thats easy to explain. No maths needed. Cape Town is better run than the other Provinces and makes the law more accesible to the people.

  • hein.huyser - 2013-01-24 21:11

As if 29/100 00 is acceptable. Saps, you are failing us. Gov. You have lost your moral compass. Time to replace you

  • pjthesecond.eldest - 2013-01-25 06:55

I am better off in Canada where the murder rate last year was 1,74 per 100 000.

  • jane.randall.1422 - 2013-01-25 07:40

One of the shocking things for me is that every South African I spoke to had either been shot, stabbed or knew someone who had been killed due to violent crime and that was normal. The truth is in a developed country that isn't normal. I don't know anyone stabbed or shot or murdered. I live in a city of 500,000. Last year we had 4 murders. In SA violence has become normalized.
