Durban - A 19-year-old man led KwaZulu-Natal police to the body of a teenager whom he claimed “the devil” made him kill, police said on Thursday.

A police source close to the investigation, who could not be named as he is not authorised to speak to the press, said the suspect had handed himself in at the Hillcrest Police Station on Wednesday.

“He walked into the police station and said that he had killed someone. He obviously couldn't bear to be alone with his own thoughts any longer,” the officer said.

The man, who cannot be named until he appears in court next week, allegedly led police officers to a manhole in the Embo Reserve which was no longer in service.

“He said that he had hit the victim on the head repeatedly with a hammer and then placed his body in the hole. When we arrived we found that the body had been covered by sand and gravel.”

Police search and rescue unit officers cleared the debris and recovered the body.

“While the body was being recovered, the suspect said that the devil made him do it,” the officer said.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed that the teen’s body was found.

“The body was found in the early evening near Embo Reserve in Hillcrest. The body had been placed in a disused manhole and had been covered with soil.”

“Detectives who had visited the scene did note that there were visible wounds to the boy’s head. A 19-year-old suspect was arrested. He will appear in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court on April 7 2015 on a charge of murder."
