Johannesburg - A KwaZulu-Natal official is in hospital and a man believed to be his gardener has died following a violent altercation between the two men in Newlands, Durban, the transport department said on Tuesday.

The Road Traffic Inspectorate officer shot the man twice on Monday afternoon after the man allegedly attacked him with a bush knife, stabbing him at the back of his head. The incident took place at the officer's home in John Dory drive, Newlands East.

Transport MEC Willies Mchunu said the matter was being investigated by the police and that the official, who was currently hospitalised, was co-operating with them.

"I note... reports that the officer acted in self-defence and then alerted the police to report the incident to his RTI supervisor and to the SAPS.

"His service pistol was removed from him and taken in for ballistic testing."

Mchunu said South Africans needed to realise that violence was not a solution to problems.

Police spokesperson Jay Naicker said an inquest docket had been opened.

"The motive of the incident is unknown at this stage. An inquest docket was opened at Newlands East police station for investigation," Naicker said.
