Durban - A suspected gang fight at a northern KwaZulu-Natal high school has left one teenager dead and another seriously wounded.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said police were called to a school in Mkhwakhweni on Monday after a “dispute” was reported.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that two rival gangs within the same school were involved in an argument resulting in a fight breaking out.

“Pupils allegedly stabbed each other during the altercation and two pupils who were seriously injured were taken to hospital for medical attention. Mbuyiseni Ntshangase, 16, died on arrival at the hospital whilst the second pupil remains in hospital in a serious condition,” he said.

Naicker added that a case of murder was opened at the Pongola police station.

“Police have arrested a 20-year-old suspect and he will be charged for murder. He is expected to appear at Pongola Magistrate’s Court tomorrow [on Wednesday],” he said.
