Durban - A man was killed and 17 others were injured in two serious motor vehicle collisions in Durban on Tuesday night.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said that a man was killed when his car slammed into a truck on the N2 southbound carriageway near the King Shaka International Airport.

“Exact detail is still speculative but a report from the scene indicates that the vehicle collided into the rear of the truck and overturned on impact. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and was found lying in the roadway,” he said.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the man had sustained life threatening injuries and was lying in the slow lane. Sadly he was declared dead at the roadside.”

In another incident, 17 people were injured when a bakkie carrying construction workers overturned on the Umdloti Link Road near Verulam.

“Seventeen people were injured in the roll-over accident and reports tell us that the bakkie with people on the back veered off the road and rolled, the occupants being thrown from the wreckage as it overturned,” Botha added.

“Paramedics and other services arrived at the scene and found the patients spread over a large area. After medics treated the wounded at the scene, they transported them to various hospitals for the care that they required.”
