Durban - A minibus taxi driver was shot dead by three men in Durban's Avoca Hills suburb on Thursday morning, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

"Three men approached a taxi driver, and shot him in his chest and arm," Captain Thulani Zwane said.

The 58-year-old man had stopped to pick up pupils when he was shot and robbed of his firearm and cellphone.

"The motive for the murder is unclear, but we suspect it could be robbery."

The three children who witnessed the shooting have been taken for counselling. Police opened a case of robbery and murder. No arrests had been made.
