KZN wildlife board declared invalid

Pietermaritzburg - The Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife Board was declared invalid by the KwaZulu-Natal High Court on Tuesday.

Judge Piet Koen said the board had not been properly appointed in terms of the KwaZulu-Natal Conservation Act.

The applicants in the case were the Animal Interest Alliance (AIA) and Greytown-based Shemungwe Game Capture organisation.

The main respondent was the MEC for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs.

The AIA's William Horsfield said that only five members had been appointed to the board instead of the mandatory nine.

These orders were suspended for six months on condition that the MEC moved to ensure lawful appointments to the board.

If the MEC failed to comply with this condition within six months the orders would become effective.

The AIA represents commercial animal, bird and reptile breeders, zoos, animal keepers and trainers, and circus operators.

Horsfield said many people keenly interested in wildlife, such as representatives of organised agriculture, traditional leaders, and rural communities, had not been considered for appointment to the board.

He said more wildlife experts had not been appointed to the board, as was stipulated by the KwaZulu-Natal Conservation Act.

Eish! Gone are the days when the old Natal Parks Board ran a tight and well-disciplined organisation and was accountable to the public... I have very good memories of the times we - as a family - spent at Charter's Creek and St. Lucia; when I was heavily involved in the Bluff Nature Reserve in Durban... I'm afraid those good days are now as water under the bridge... I weep for Lake St. Lucia and what it has become under the new dispensation...

This turn of events is scary, at least we have some checks and balances, but the cost of inefficiency is very high...

I most sincerely, most sincerely hope that commercial enterprises that want to install cable cars in the Drakensberg are shown the door once we get KZN Parks back on the right track. Please, please, please don't let this happen. Make sure that the right people are appointed. This not about change and progress, it is about preserving what is good. The Kruger Park is fairly rapidly going to pot and has been over-commercialised for some time. Don't let it happen to the 'Berg. The old Natal Parks Board repulsed many attempts for more commercialisation over the years and I thank God for that. I salute those people.

OMG South Africa is a laugh a minute - what a comedy show. There are many right people out there who should be employed in these positions, but won't be as they don't have the right connections, so it will go to some nincompoop who has bought his/her credentials, but is the brother of the uncle of the sister of the father of the person in a higher position. What a shame that a BBBBEEEEE will be appointed just because.....
