Durban - The chief executives tasked with running the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government’s 12 public entities earn a cool R24.5m annually.

This emerged on Wednesday from information supplied in a written response to a DA question to Mike Mabuyakhulu. The figure excludes travel allowances and a few other perks such as cellphone allowances.

The 12 institutions are the Ithala Finance Development Corporation, the Dube Tradeport Industrial Development Zone, the Moses Kotane Institute, Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board, the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone, the KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission, the KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Authority, the KwaZulu-Natal Small Business Development Agency, Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife, KwaZulu-Natal Growth Fund and Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal.

Six of the entities had chief executives earning more than R2m annually, while six of the chairpersons of the various boards overseeing these entities were taking home in excess of R500 000 a year.
