After being detained for nine months in the UAE, Professor Cyril Karabus, an oncologist, returned home to Cape Town to fanfare and cheers. Watch.WATCH

Cape Town - Cyril Karabus is adamant he will sue the Abu Dhabi government, Emirates Airlines and the hospital group he worked for, his lawyer says.

Karabus, 78, was detained in the UAE on charges of forgery and manslaughter over the death of a young patient he treated in the region more than a decade ago. He was held for nine months.

Karabus’s lawyer Michael Bagraim told Eyewitness News that the doctor feels very strongly that he deserves reparation for his ordeal in the UAE.

“The entire episode cost him R1.5m and has left him flat. He feels he should have never gone through that ordeal.

“We’re consulting with advocates about taking the hospital group to court and we’re also consulting with the senior council in South Africa to take Emirates Air to court and Dr Karabus feels upbeat about this.”

Karabus wants to sue Emirates Airlines because it allegedly withheld information about his looming arrest.
