Cape Town - The roof at the Oricol factory in Spartan, Kempton Park, has collapsed in a blaze following an explosion on Wednesday which left six people injured, two of them with critical injuries.

Ekhurleni disaster management services spokesperson, William Ntladi, said the explosion caused the structural collapse of the roof and part of the walls.

“Ehhurleni fire services are still at the scene extinguishing the fire,” he told News24.

An eyewitness from a building opposite the factory told EWN that the explosion shook his office.

The cause of the explosion, which happened at approximately 08:30, is not yet known and is being investigated.

Oricol is a waste management company with industrial operations including high pressure cleaning, asbestos removal, and hazardous waste services.

According to Netcare911 spokesperson, Santi Steinmann, six people sustained critical injuries.

“A helicopter was deployed to airlift one of the critically injured people to a nearby facility, the other five were transported to nearby facilities for urgent medical care,” she said.

Steinmann said the victims sustained burn injuries. The airlifted man was taken to the Milpark burns unit in Johannesburg.
