Johannesburg - The funder involved in a joint venture with Masibambisane Rural Development Initiative (MRDI) has pulled out of a R1bn deal to build a town in the Nkandla neighbourhood, reported the Sunday Independent.

According to the Sunday Independent, the company’s spokesperson Keith Warmbeck said they had decided to withdraw from the project as the Nkandla issue was too controversial.

They were set to build a shopping centre, a school, a further education and training college, small factory units and expand the local clinic and agri-processing facilities.

President Jacob Zuma and his cousin Deebo Mzobe chair MRDI. The new ‘town’ was to have been built a few kilometres from Zuma’s controversial homestead.

Meanwhile in August last year, the town project – then dubbed the Zumaville project -  came under the spotlight when the MRDI claimed bankruptcy.
