Cape Town - A hearing before the Western Cape Liquor Authority into a Khayelitsha tavern where six people died, has been postponed to September.

This comes after Phumlani Abraham, owner of the tavern Osi’s Place, requested a postponement on Monday to allow him time to secure a legal representative.

The matter was postponed to September 21.

Abraham’s licence was temporarily suspended at a hearing in July, following a stampede at the tavern in which six people were killed. Two more were killed when the vehicle they were transported in crashed on the way to hospital.

"I... urge all residents to contact the Liquor Authority with reports of transgressions at legal outlets. We can only stamp out the negative impact of alcohol abuse if we join hands," said Economic Opportunities MEC Alan Winde on July 9, following the temporary suspension of the tavern's liquor licence.

"Together, we can run these traders out of communities. We encourage responsible trading and commend those in the industry who are complying with the law," Winde said.
