Cape Town - The family of a woman accused of kidnapping a baby 17 years ago were left shaken on Friday after her arrest and appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court.

The accused stood in the dock wearing a white and black striped sweater.

The baby girl was snatched from her sleeping mother’s arms when she was just 3-days-old at Groote Schuur Hospital.

The suspect’s visibly upset family told reporters outside the court: "We grew up with the child, we took care of her.”

Her case was postponed to 6 March. She will remain in custody at the Woodstock police station.

The girl’s biological father said his daughter is receiving extensive counselling.

  • For legal reasons the kidnap victim in this case may not be identified. No pictures, including any of the accused or family, may be used as they may identify the victim.
