Johannesburg - A couple died and their two children were injured when their car crashed into a tree on the N4 outside Swartruggens, the North West department of public safety said on Monday.

Spokesperson Lesiba Moses Kgwele said a 30-year-old woman lost control of the car and it veered off the road, hit a tree and overturned in Moedwil on Sunday.

"It is suspected that the driver might have been trying to avoid something that disturbed her as skid marks on the tar road showed that she had applied brakes before she lost control of the vehicle," he said.

The woman and her husband died. Their 13-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son were taken to the Ferncrest Hospital in Rustenburg with serious injuries.

The family was travelling from Mahikeng to Centurion.

The couple were my neighbours and very good people. It is a sad loss to the community and South Africa.
