Johannesburg - A group of school children were rescued after their taxi crashed into a water-filled ditch in Kempton Park on Monday morning.

The taxi, transporting school children from Kempton Park to the Oxford Combined School, crashed into the ditch after the driver appeared to lose control, said Ekurhuleni Disaster Emergency Management Services spokesperson William Ntladi.

''We have accounted for 15 children, and the driver, who was the 16th person,'' said Ntladi.

Four people sustained serious injuries and 12 minor injuries.

The SA Police Service's diving unit was checking under the vehicle to make sure they had not missed anybody as the ditch was full of water.

The accident happened on the corner of Strydom and Pongola drive in the East Rand town.

The driver was among those taken to hospital, said Ntladi.
