Killer gets 25yrs for farm murder

2010-12-14 14:41

Brandvlei - A Northern Cape man was sentenced to life imprisonment for a murder during a farm attack at Brandvlei in March 2009, police said on Tuesday.

Gevin Beukes, 22, was sentenced in the Northern Cape High Court to life imprisonment for murder, 10 years for attempted murder, and to prison terms ranging from three to 15 years for various other crimes such as kidnapping, robbery and housebreaking, Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Cherelle Ehlers said.

Beukes and two others shot and killed Loudine van Blerk while assaulting farmer Willouw De Klerk Cilliers and a domestic worker on his farm near Brandvlei.

The robbers fled the scene in the farmer's stole vehicle with Cilliers and the domestic worker. The vehicle overturned and Cilliers and two robbers were killed.

Ehlers said Beukes was arrested on the farm and police recovered several stolen firearms in the stolen vehicle and at a nearby dam.

"The robbers fled the scene in the farmer's stole vehicle with Cilliers and the domestic worker. The vehicle overturned and Cilliers and two robbers were killed". As a news24 reader, my wish for 2011 is for news24 to improve their proofreading and editing.

Perfume - 2010-12-14 15:32 that means the domestic worker is still alive, judging from the article

  • MetalCut - 2010-12-14 15:18

WTF only 25yrs for murder and more, dear god this country is FUBAR!!

      Makutu - 2010-12-14 16:25

      25yrs = life.

      MetalCut - 2010-12-14 16:53

@Makutu: I dont think so, that stinking thing will probably be out in 5 years, back for more!

      Ms_Ann_Throp - 2010-12-14 16:57

It was life imprisonment, not 25 yrs. BUt you would know that if you read more than the headline before you decidede to add your special 2 cents...

      andrewpottow - 2010-12-14 20:55

Makutu is right, Ms_Ann_Throp. Do you know what Life imprisonment means in terms of years? Life is not for the rest of their natural born life. A life sentence means 25 years in jail, no more but normally much less thanks to parole.

  • allie - 2010-12-14 15:22

And its going to cost us,the taxpayer,R950,000 at today`s prices to keep this sub-human thing alive and fed for 25 years.Rather destroy the thing.

      Ms_Ann_Throp - 2010-12-14 15:42

cant you people say ANYTHING positive EVER? This guy has been found guilty and is serving a sentence for their crime. WHY must there still be WHINING!!

      gbrits2009 - 2010-12-14 16:14

@Ms_Ann_Throp - Let someone kill your partner, rape you.. hell .. maybe kill your daughter as well... Then sit in court and see your killer get 25 years... and then watch you smile and be happy ... O wait, then there is presidential pardoning as well, see the killer released because of an excellent report for behavior in jail ... and watch you smile again and not Whine ...

      Fision - 2010-12-14 16:16

@Ms_Ann_Throp - Its not whining. Its an opinion. Its our right to raise our opinions. How DARE you berate us for doing that? And the reason we're unhappy is because we, as tax payers, now have to take care of this lowlife. He took a life. His should be taken too.

      Ms_Ann_Throp - 2010-12-14 16:50

Killing perpetrators doesnt bring back dead people. Revenge is a base emotion. Justice is being served here. As opposed to anyone saying something positive, like say, how our justice system isnt a COMPLETE failure, all there is here is more misery.

      jacquesotto - 2010-12-14 17:46

25 years should turn to hanging we need the death sentence back. Life for a life that fair. life for 25 years thats crap!

  • sbouttell - 2010-12-14 15:28

I thought that the farm murders were a figment of our overactive imaginations? Decent that two of the culprits died in the act, or we would also be paying for them to apear in court ad infinitum...

  • Bismark22 - 2010-12-14 15:41

Hang the bastard! The money being spent for imprisonment on this coward could have been used to educate children in a rural area.

  • Baby Ewing - 2010-12-14 15:48

News24 shameful journalism. What is the Problem? AA?

  • David - 2010-12-14 16:03

If Jacob Zuma was to bring the death sentence back for Murder he would be a hero to all South Africans no matter what colour they are. The death sentence is still carried out in lots of countries world wide so what is the problem with executing a murderer. An Eye for and Eye is how it should be. In fact hanging is to lenient for inhuman things that kill innocent people they should be hung drawn and quartered - 2010-12-14 16:30

Better yet - rapists and murderers should be used for all those scientific experiments that poor innocent animals are currently suffering for....let them suffer daily for years and years before putting them down when they are no longer useful

  • Petro Barnet - 2010-12-14 16:14

No sentence can bring those back those who we have lost. But atleast he is in a place where some other criminal will make him a little BITCH!

      Makutu - 2010-12-14 16:27

Most convicts don't even live for more than 20 years in jail. Don't worry. He'll be dead in prison. You know gang initiations in prison? Someone has to be killed. Its called Blood In Blood OUT.

  • Gail - 2010-12-14 16:27

@gbrits. 25 years plus the attached sentences will get him a long stint in jail. Justice is not about killing a killer. That is called revenge. Be grateful we do not have the death penalty because we are still a young democracy and one can be falsely accused by people seeking revenge and if there was a death penalty you might be put to death before your innocence could be established. People who serve long terms - 10 years is a long time can be rehabilitated and a death for a death does not bring back the victim.

      Ms_Ann_Throp - 2010-12-14 16:52

      well said

      jacquesotto - 2010-12-14 17:52

Sorry Gail but if we get 1 or 2 innocent peopled hanged sad to say, but it is better than 50 innocent murders a day. The death sentence is less barbaric than the crime. How can you state we should be grateful when innocent lives is lost. Also a death sentence is based beyond reasonable doubt

      brinjal - 2010-12-14 19:10

The death sentence prevents killers getting released and killing again also saves my hard earned tax money.

  • Ms_Ann_Throp - 2010-12-14 16:55

People are missing the point. He got LIFE IMPRISONMENT for murder, the 25 yrs were for attempted murder and other assorted crimes, in addition to LIFE IMPRISONMENT. Does NEws24 even read their own articles before they write the headline?

      SA Citizen - 2010-12-14 21:50

The death sentence is the only punishment killers understand. It will make them think twice before murdering innocent people. They are not botherd by jail sentence at all and will not stop them from killing. You must understand that we have an extremely high rate of murders in SA. We are overpopulated with hardcore crimnals. And the environment is currently criminal friendly and are getting feuled by the militant songs of the ANC and Malem's song.

      juanita.viviers - 2010-12-28 00:12

Section 51 of the Criminal Procedure Act 1977 controls the minimum sentences for 'other' types of murders, rapes and robberies to 25, 15 and 10 years respectively, so parole is almost always granted to life sentences after the minimum sentence for the lesser crime has been served. However, a prisoner must be given a parole hearing after having served 25 years.

  • jcarter - 2010-12-15 05:42

MS_Ann_Throp, It's not just about justice, but also protecting society. We all know these criminals get out in no time and just murder again. We are not talking about thieves, we are talking about useless people who cannot be trusted in society. Nothing will flurish under them. All that happens is the good, productive people of SA get raped, tortured and murdered while these criminals (who cannot be rehabilitated) get moer rights. Bring back the death penalty. SA needs to clean house and send a clear mesage that crime is unexeptable. We do not need these pigs in society.....bottom line

  • gbrits2009 - 2010-12-15 09:54

@Gail, Tromp : These are hardened criminals, they WILL NOT be rehabilitated in jail, now way, in jail they will get worse, living the "gangster" life. Once they are out, they will go back and kill to take revenge for being in jail, but not realizing he went to jail for his own actions, now we have another innocent citizen killed AGAIN. Or he gets his chommies on the outside to take revenge on the witnesses or family members that survived the attack, AGAIN we have lost ANOTHER law abiding citizen .. Your comments are UTTER BULL SHIT !!!!
