Johannesburg - The DA on Thursday described the life imprisonment sentences imposed on Johan Kotzé and his co-accused as appropriate.

"We hope this sentence will send a strong message to future perpetrators that violence against women and children should [not] - and will not - be tolerated," Democratic Alliance MP Helen Lamoela said in a statement.

The SA National Aids Council (Sanac) also welcomed the sentencing.

"The sector views the verdict as a victory in the fight against women abuse and gender-based violence of all forms," Sanac spokesperson Khopotso Bodibe said in a statement.

The Commission for Gender Equality said the life terms showed the courts were taking sexual offences seriously.

"This will set a precedent to the 'would be' sexual offenders that our society and justice system are tired of violence against women and children," spokesperson Javu Baloyi said.

"Such a successful prosecution will definitely give courage to other victims of gender-based violence to come out and testify."

Kotzé, Andries Sithole, Pieta Mohlake and Sello Mphaka were sentenced by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Kotzé and Sithole got life imprisonment for the murder of Conrad Bonnette, 19, the son of Ina Bonnette, Kotzé's ex-wife.

Mohlake and Mphaka were acquitted on the murder charge, but each of the four was given 10 years' imprisonment for kidnapping.

All four men were also each given a life sentence on the rape charges.

For assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, Kotzé received 15 years and the other three eight years each.
