Johannesburg – An apparent associate of Czech fugitive and businessman Radovan Krejcir tried to fight back attackers, police said.

The man, who has close ties to Krejcir, was killed in a shooting in Smith Street, Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg on Saturday.

The man was shot while waiting at the traffic light in his car, police spokesperson Katlego Mogale said.

"The car [an Audi Q7] stopped at the robots and a Ford Ranger stopped next to him and opened fire. The victim tried to retaliate," Mogale said.

"The Ranger fled the scene shortly after."

Paramedics declared the 51-year-old man dead on the scene.

Eyewitness News reported that the man was an associate of Czech fugitive and businessman Krejcir.

Mogale could not reveal the name of the victim, his nationality or if he was a known associate of Krejcir's.

"Some of this man's relatives are overseas, so until they are [informed], I cannot reveal his identity."

She said police had started their preliminary investigation.

No suspects or leads were immediately being pursued.
