Kruger buffalo kills suspected poacher

2012-02-22 16:00

Johannesburg - A suspected poacher was killed by a buffalo in the Kruger National Park, park authorities said on Wednesday.

"A person was killed by a buffalo just north of Punda Maria last night. Apparently there were three men and two of them ran away," spokesperson William Mabasa said.

Reports on Wednesday said the men were poachers, but Mabasa could not confirm this.

"But you could ask yourself, what would you want in the park at night without coming through the gate?"

Lieutant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said the 35-year-old man was trampled and died at the scene.

Police have opened an inquest docket and would further investigate the case.

      Bluemast - 2012-02-23 00:45

Don't think the lions will eat the left-overs, but the vultures will :-) lovely! The investigation team is probably hard at work tracking the buffalo hoof database to find the culprit - what a load of crap we need more buffalo and water holes to lure hippos to the hotspots where the rhino are! Hippos love to trample people if you can call them that!

  • Oz - 2012-02-22 17:19

What are the chances that everyone who has applauded this man's death has a home that keeps them dry and warm; has a car to transport them around; don't worry as to how their family is going to get their next meal or how their kids are going to be able to go to school. Do you think the poacher did what he did because he had all these things? Or was he was just trying to get what should be considered a basic human right? Very very few people choose or want to be a criminal. This country is still in deep trouble and ignorant, selfish people commenting from their nice little offices on their nice little laptops or from their nice little smartphones isn't resolving anything. This man's death is a tragedy like any needless death, but more importantly, its an indictment on your country.

      Sharon - 2012-02-22 17:43

      Tissue, anyone?

      Chris - 2012-02-22 17:59

The only tragedy here is your comment, the rifles poachers use are usually stolen during farm attacks, these guys are involved in international criminal syndicates and you want to sell me some sob story? Pull the other one.

      Oz - 2012-02-22 18:39

Sharon - please save your tissues for the man's family. Chris, it matters not where the weapon comes from, but where the need to commit a crime comes from. None of you will ever be forced to walk a mile in this man's shoes, and unless you have done that, its cruel and callous to celebrate his death.

      zelna.rossouw - 2012-02-22 19:40

You must be one of the survivors to feel pitty for this poacher. There are only 2 people having an opinion in remorse for the killed poacher. I would investigate these 2 guys.

      snylo - 2012-02-22 19:46

Oz, try your pity-party on others who care. Clearly you either do not live in this country, judging by your wording of 'an indictment on YOUR country'(not on OUR country), or have yet to be a victim of senseless crime for selfish human gain. These people are guilty of ruining our country for their own gain. It is greed! If you are so desperate to steal in order to feed your family, so be it, but steal food. These poachers don't poach to eat the animals, but to sell the bits and profit hugely from them. I wonder if your opinion would be the same, if your child was perhaps raped and murdered by said criminal, and your child stabbed and killed the criminal in the process? Poor man, he didn't want to be a criminal? was it his human right to do violate and kill an innocent party? Catch a wake up. Death affects us all at some point, and tragedies happen BUT one must lie in his bed as he makes it. well done to the buffalo for excellent self defense skills!

      Boethein - 2012-02-23 08:14

      adrian.v.d.merwe - 2012-02-23 08:25

Well Said Snylo! (and 99% of everyone commenting) OZ you clueless about how things work in Africa!! I think the 'Like' and 'Dislike' speak for themselves?! You the only fool clicking the dislike because you ignorant to these syndicates and the African mentality. You sitting in your 'perfect' little country clueless to how the world works, been brain washed by your media, feeling sorry for criminals ... People Always have a choice of there actions in life!

      dave.j.colquhoun - 2012-02-23 08:34

Hey Oz. I gather from your comment that you don't live down our neck of the woods. Well, Heads UP!! You're smoking too close to the ground here. Beware the Buffalo don't stamp on yer human rightists head! Pity for poachers my butt!! I worked really long and hard to get what I have and I also came from a disadvantaged background. Like the poacher, we all have a choice. I chose to work for an honest employer and he chose to work for a crime syndicate. We need to train more Buffalo's here and perhaps our Rhino will stand a better chance. Please get off the pot and go back to your shrink, you need the help.

      Elle-Black - 2012-02-23 09:11

@ Oz dont condone crime dude,in any form

      Andre - 2012-02-23 09:19

You dont have a clue what you are talking about, they will kill anything that moves, whether they can eat it or not. This idiot should not have been in the KNP in the first place ,he got what was coming to him.

      Hannelie - 2012-02-23 15:18

You are obviously from Australia (therefore called Oz) and dont give a damm about our Rhino's in any way, Concentrate on what you can do for the Aboriginee's and we will focus on our Home affairs, thank you

      Pm - 2012-02-23 22:32

Oz,are you telling us you HAVE walked a mile in this man's shoes? If so, you have probably poached yourself in which case, let me introduce you to a buffalo!!

      Sheik - 2012-02-23 23:26

In the dark in the Kruger Park, Wrong place, wrong time, my sympathy lie with the Buffalo for being so slow and allowing the other two to get away. I'll have the police explain to the Buffalo that he/she infringed on the poachers basic human rights and that the poacher and his mates were not out there hunting illegally, but only trying to feed their large families or that they just wanted to educate their children. This man's death was not needless if others learn from it. PS. A lesson that others can learn from this is that you don't go hunting in the dark in dangerous places where nature fights back.

      Sheik - 2012-02-23 23:39

Reading other comments on Oz, I guess his an ex South African who fled because of crime and still comes on to local SA sites to justify his reason for leaving. It might come as a shock to you that titles like poacher, thief, killer, rapist are not gained by being a good person.

Am I the only one sad that the death of this man? He was probably trying to feed his family

      Sharon - 2012-02-22 17:53

Would you have been equally sad if this poacher had succeeded and the report was instead that yet another rhino had been mercilessly slaughtered? They don't even give a stuff that it may be a pregnant female! I tell you what, Ollie, I tried REALLY hard to feel pity for the poacher, then I thought - he felt no regret for what he was planning to do, so no, sorry, no pity here....

      Chris - 2012-02-22 18:00

Not sure if you're the only one, but the rest of us are having a great time reading about this guy's death. You're propably the same hippy cheering from the side if it had been a hunter.

      snylo - 2012-02-22 19:49

Ignorance Ollie! The man was not killing the buffalo to feed it to his family! Would it not be easier to steal foodstuffs to feed a family rather than poach an animal to sell off for financial gain?

      dave.j.colquhoun - 2012-02-23 08:37

Hey Ollie. Feed his family with what?? Rhino horn. I don't think so. No-one eats Buffalo meat any more. Cows and chickens are much more convenient.

      Nicholas - 2012-02-23 08:55

You could say the same about bank robbers and hijackers, they are only trying to feed their families!

      andre.sunnasy - 2012-02-23 22:59

ollie, you're not alone, its really bizarre to see the hatred in most of these comments. Condolences to the mans family. May he rest in peace.

      Sheik - 2012-02-23 23:49

Olliebromley is Oz family of your's. Crime no matter the reason for it , is still crime. People were sent to Australia for just stealing bread, but it was a crime and they were made to pay for it.

  • Armand Jonker - 2012-02-22 17:53

I love this Buffalo, its a pitty he let the other two get away. But he probably saved the life of another Rhino. And for those who feel sorry for this poacher, do you honestly think he felt anything for the other rhinos or other animals he has shot previously? I salute this Buffalo!!

  • Graham - 2012-02-22 17:53
