Johannesburg - The statue of Paul Kruger in Krugersdorp has suffered the same fate as its cousin in Church Square in Pretoria on Wednesday.

The Krugersdorp statue and that of J G Strijdom were covered with red paint.

The city that was founded by Marthinus Pretorius in 1887 was named after Paul Kruger before it was renamed Mogale City in 2006.

Among the statues that have been defaced recently are Mahatma Gandhi’s in Johannesburg, Louis Botha’s in front of Parliament, the statue of a soldier in Uitenhage, Queen Victoria’s in Port Elizabeth and King George V’s at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The EFF admitted to being behind the defacing of the Paul Kruger statue in Pretoria.

Controversial Afrikaans singers Steve Hofmeyr and Sunette Bridges subsequently staged a protest along with Afrikaner political parties including the Front Nasionaal Party, the Boer Vrou Liga and the FF Plus in Church Square last Wednesday.

Meanwhile, AgangSA announced it would gather around Paul Kruger's statue in Pretoria from 10:00 on Thursday to "protect it from being vandalised or demolished by unruly members of the society".

"AgangSA believes that statues should be removed legal in a civil manner and not be demolished," the party said.
