KwaMhlanga - The management of KwaMhlanga Plaza in Mpumalanga denied news reports that there was serious crime inside the complex - and said security inside the plaza was tight.

Plaza spokesperson Sillion Lekgoana said on Wednesday: "The 13 armed robberies and five rapes reported during the opening week of the centre actually happened in the surrounding area and there was no crime inside the plaza at all."

The KwaMhlanga Plaza is located at a busy intersection on the road from Pretoria to Moloto, in Mpumalanga north-east of the city. It is served by an extensive bus and taxi network.

Lekgoana said: "We have tight security in the centre with 20 guards on patrol and there is a regular police presence."

"Residents from surrounding villages and commuters to and from Pretoria use the supermarket, banks, shops and take-away food and liquor outlets at the centre. The shoppers are secure inside, but unfortunately the crime takes place outside."

Confirming Lekgoana's statement, captain Malcolm Mokomene said it was apparent rapists and armed robbers were operating out of the surrounding villages and appealed to the community to help by reporting people known to be engaged in criminal activities.

Mokomene said anyone who had any information could contact the police anonymously on the toll free Crimestop line 08600 10111.
