Johannesburg - A member of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal was shot and wounded in Wembezi township, Umtshezi, the party said on Friday.

"Comrade Khethiwe Radebe was near her house when she was shot six times by unknown attackers around 19:00, and she is in a critical condition in hospital," provincial ANC spokesperson Senzo Mkhize said in a statement.

KwaZulu-Natal police could not be immediately reached to confirm the shooting.

Three ANC members were attacked in the same township, in central KwaZulu-Natal, on 24 April.

The three survived the shooting.

However one, who was pregnant at the time, lost her unborn child.

"We are very concerned about the situation in Wembezi. We have lost a lot of comrades in that area. It seems that there is a well-oiled plan to eliminate our members there," Mkhize said.

In March, Sibusiso Majola, the chairperson of an ANC branch in Umtshezi, was killed there.

In August last year Jimmy Lembede, a ward councillor in the municipality, was killed and his 11-year-old son was assaulted.
