Durban - An alleged hitman has been arrested for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Eshowe, west of Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said officers from Umlazi Crime Intelligence, the Provincial Tracking Team and Umhlali K9 had arrested a 43-year-old suspect in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

"Members from the crime intelligence unit had gathered information on a planned hit on one of the residents in the Eshowe area. After the information was verified and the alleged hitman identified, an operation was planned."

The operation was conducted in the Ntumeni area.

The man was allegedly found in possession of an AK47 rifle with 41 live rounds of ammunition, a 9mm CZ75 pistol, a Taurus 9mm pistol and 67 live rounds of ammunition.

He was expected to appear in the Eshowe Magistrate's Court later on Wednesday, Naicker said.
