Johannesburg - Fires that swept KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend were contained by Monday morning, Working on Fire said.

Twenty-five fires reported in the province since Friday, affecting mostly plantations and grazing land were under control, provincial co-ordinator and dispatcher Tracey Carter said.

Northern KwaZulu-Natal, with the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, were the worst affected areas.
No injuries or deaths were reported.

The wildfire season runs from June to October in the northern parts of South Africa, which coincides with the dry season.

Gale force winds in the province had contributed to the development and spread of the fires.
