Durban - A five-year-old girl drowned in a swimming pool at a residence in New Germany, Pinetown, on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

"It is thought the girl was playing near the water's edge when she fell into the pool," Netcare911 spokesperson, Jeff Wicks, said.

The girl was pulled from the pool by a family member who found her floating in the water.

"When we arrived we immediately performed CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation), but despite our best efforts to revive the girl, she was declared dead on the scene," he said.

Wow this is very sad and when are parents going to install the required safety measures like nets that can stop incidents like this happening

I agree. So many of these incidents can be avoided. My heart goes out to the family especially at this time of the year

Very very sad, but like seatbelts in cars for children or carseats. Why use them - it can never happen to me!! How many cars do you see driving around with children standing up and not secured at all. Swimming pools are as dangerous.

by the way, why wasn't the kid wearing any arm bands ? pathetic excuse of parents indeed. I was forced to wear them when i was little and it paid of well. This is to blame strictly on the parents
