KwaZulu-Natal girl raped on way to school

2012-07-18 14:06

Durban - A grade 10 pupil was raped on her way to school in Endlangubo near Eshowe, the KwaZulu-Natal education department said on Wednesday.

"The teenager was travelling to school with another pupil when she was accosted by a knife-wielding man on Tuesday morning," spokesperson Muntu Lukhozi said.

The man forced the 19-year-old into the bushes and raped her. The other girl managed to escape.

The teenager managed to walk to school after the attack and reported it to the principal.

"The girl was taken to Eshowe hospital for a medical examination," Lukhozi said.

Provincial education MEC Senzo Mchunu said he was shocked.

"It is such a shame that we continue to deal with such indecent sexual assaults committed by adults against children, especially girl children.

"It is really sad that while we preach to our learners the need to preserve themselves and take pride in their bodies and lives, adults continue to do the exact opposite," Mchunu said.

An 8-year-old girl from Mvutshini area in Gingindlovu was raped in April. A teenager dragged the girl into a sugarcane field near her home, where she was assaulted and raped.

The girl's left eye was gouged out of its socket and she was left bleeding profusely from both eyes. She had been walking home from school at the time. Her attacker bit her in the neck.

She was treated at Ngwelezane Hospital.

The boy's grandmother called the police when people accused him of the crime. The boy had allegedly attacked another girl at school earlier.

He faces a charge of rape and two of attempted murder.

    Aged 19 in grade 10?

      Michaele - 2012-07-18 14:26

What has age in grade 10 got to do with such a horendous crime? If she was 30 in grade 10, rape cannot be condoned, sorry the long and the short of it!!!!!

      barry.mcbride - 2012-07-18 14:50

@blignault.michaele: I know, such a remark is beyond comprehension.

      cgieljoumie - 2012-07-18 15:06

Gill you must have a very low self esteem what does age have to do with the crime and to think that you are a female.

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-07-18 15:11

There could be all sorts of reasons why she's 19. She may have had to drop out because she became too ill to remain in school? She may have had to look after her yiunger siblings when their parents died and put theor welfare first until they are older. Should you not be concerned that some savage violated her? She could have been minding her own business or would it have made a difference had she not been on her way to school but to run some or other errand?

      lorrainesuh - 2012-07-18 15:25

Gill you're not female enough, did you even do grd 10

      zimbobwe.mugabe - 2012-07-18 15:51

"Get the masses uneducated so they can vote for the ANC!!!" That is the cry I hear everyday on this forum. When the masses try to educate themselves here is another cry!!! I would rather have the masses from 19yr olds to 60 yr olds get educated and vote with their brains not hearts. Viva DA viva!!!

  • nketso.kgwadi - 2012-07-18 14:24

Kill him as that girl will never forget the horror this idiot put her. If you are a man imagine someone raping you from behind.

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-18 14:26

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-18 15:12

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-18 14:41

Well @ least she is trying and not a " drop out. "

      Junebugg - 2012-07-18 14:55

@kgaugelo.mashilo.9 as opposed to seating at home making more babies and depending on government grants ??? Not everyone was fortunate like you, like Rob said she is trying..What do you want her to do?? Drop out coz she is 19?

      Junebugg - 2012-07-18 14:56

@kgaugelo.mashilo. Its amazing that you are a female and you are overlooking the horrible crime that is committed against another woman..But you just cant wait to discredit her where she is trying to make a better life for herself.

      lorrainesuh - 2012-07-18 15:05

kgaugelo, do you even have Matric, at least she's trying to have an education.

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-07-18 15:06

Maybe she's been studying from under a tree all these years and the schools have to close for a long time during floods/bitterly cold winter, etc?

      thembi.mokoena3 - 2012-07-18 15:40

@kgaugelo, would it hv been better if she was 16? The issue here is that she has been RAPED by a lunatic who probably thinks like you!

  • lorrainesuh - 2012-07-18 14:56

The girl was raped here and she's traumatized for life, but all you people think of is her age, don't be heartless, no one in any age deserve this.

  • treyzo.mbelo - 2012-07-18 15:00

Wellcome to the rape capital of the world, this is a common thing. With the current government in power who are busy milking dry the countries coffers, I dont see the title going to a different country

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2012-07-18 15:16

So this is what to expect with Mandelas Rainbow Nation. of course he wants all the colours mixed, and has assisted the ANC in giving them full permission to do what they want to. Kill the lot of them.

  • afrikeni - 2012-07-18 15:20

And the best our justice system can dish out is "life in prison" - meaning - out after two decades after "sucessful rehabilitation". Good lucky to the raped - what a farce.Where is DEATH PENALTY when one needs it?

      tommo.too - 2012-07-18 22:10

Never again the death penalty afrikeni. NEVER!!

  • dhavandran.palavar - 2012-07-18 15:33

the bastard will get of lightly and be sent for observation like the ging case. he has been seeing and hearing things. the anomaly in our justice system, catch a shad out of season or more than your bag limit, the sentence is harsher than for rape.

  • Stuka - 2012-07-18 15:39

wonder what 67 minutes means to her today...

  • Matthew - 2012-07-18 15:50

Question goes: Do we castrate them,so they're pretty much "munich's" or do we just kill them? happy for either or.One way or the other this will be up to the people to find Justice.SAPS and our current leading government just dont care to do their jobs

      Stuka - 2012-07-18 15:57

hey Matt "munich's" are probably people living in's what you are looking for

  • zanelenomntu.magxala.9 - 2012-07-18 16:11

  • emmanuel.modika - 2012-07-18 16:28

Death penalty is the only solution. Our kids get raped,we are robbed, hijack and even killed almost everyday but the perpetrators still walks free on our streets.Lets put this criminals where they belongs \Cemetery\ not jail.

  • anele.mveku - 2012-07-18 16:35

Everytime I read abt a woman or a child being raped my heart is torn into peaces,no person deserves to be violated this way maybe the justice system should start sending a clear msg-that rape is a sick act and will not be tolerated.

  • Gill McCain - 2012-07-18 17:26

I only asked, and certainly did not mean to infer that she deserved to be raped. Unfortunately thousands of girls will go through the same trauma before anything changes in this broken society. I think that in many cases communities know who the rapists are but turn a blind eye to their abhorrent practices. Until the patriarchical structures that protect and even on occasion promote such behavior NO female is safe. Oh,and lorrainesuh, I think you will find I have had a rather better education than you have had!

      donovan.hendricks.7 - 2012-07-18 18:18

Its al good Gill I was thinking the same thing, but you and the other lady were bold enough to ask the question, and it was haertwarming to see how black and white responed to the question,it all comes down to one thing I.e social and economic problems,if current politicians should stop being corrupt, and stop enriching themselves, there will be more money to provide good quality education, and more money to improve the police sevice, and above all adequatly qualified people must be employed in the right positions, and stop blaming the injustices of the past.

  • hudayfah.newman - 2012-07-18 18:05

No doubt he will be shown pity and will be 'rehabilitated'. While the poor girl wallows in grief. A few years later he is set free because prisons are overcrowded. Everything works out for him in the end.

  • tommo.too - 2012-07-18 22:05

And this even on Tata's birthday? Honestly this has got to stop. The whole nation is being raped when this happens. It is demeaning, it is savage and it is killing us.

  • Charles Skosana - 2012-07-18 23:02

    Dog won't stop

  • Charles Skosana - 2012-07-18 23:05

Gov'nt got nothing to do with rape, but just lack of morals

  • mokheled - 2012-08-13 10:15

Kgaugelo and Gill are both drop outs, obviously they were too clever to finish grade 10

  • achmat.jacobs.1 - 2012-09-06 15:27
