KwaZulu-Natal teachers threaten to strike

2012-11-14 16:41

Durban - More than 5 000 KwaZulu-Natal Grade R teachers have threatened to strike over salary adjustments not being put into effect, their union said on Wednesday.

"When public servants received 2012/2013 salary increments of 7% with effect from May 1 this year, about 5 200 Grade R teachers in KwaZulu-Natal did not receive increases," said the National Teachers Union (Natu).

Deputy president Allen Thompson said Grade R teachers were paid R4 000 a month, and this was unfair as they did the same amount of work that other teachers in other Grades did.

"This is exploitation at its best and is bad when it is done by the democratically elected government who claim to represent the best interest of the poor and the middle class," Thompson said.

Natu has a membership of about 90% Grade R teachers employed by the KwaZulu-Natal education department, he said.

Thompson said the union had asked Premier Zweli Mkhize to intervene. The union would embark on a strike if Mkhize did not respond by the end of next week.

"This implies that at the start of the 2013 academic year, there will be no Grade R educators in class until such time that they have clear conditions of employment, with well-stipulated benefits," he said.

The department of education does not contribute to Grade R teachers' pension pay out, medical benefits or bonuses, Thompson said.

The provincial department of education could not be immediately reached for comment.

What's that? Teachers earning R4000 per month and we put our children in their care where they help with their development? Ironic to think miners DEMAND R12500 when our teachers earn far less after so much time and money invested in studies.

The Grade R teachers have always been over-looked in the Education Dept, but the 'top brass' in the same Dept. always has spare cash for parties and so called award ceremonies!!!!

Let them strike - Grade R in merely a reception year or as I understand it, pre school.

OH fu** off with you bloody strikes already! this coumtry's education is already in the toilet, you aren't helping by demanding a higher salary! Morebthan 20% of the SA budget is spent on education. Just piss off. Stop hindering education in this country. It should be made illegal for educators to strike.

Before I get any smart remarks about my grammar, I blame this iPad's touchscreen keyboard and my own laziness in not checking the spelling.

you don't understand sir\r\n1...your spelling mistakes and foul language are a sign of a disgruntled Grade R teacher who failed to give you a strong foundation for manners and writing.\r\n2. She knew that she's the pillar to your education...but honestly she won't make you learn whilst her kids sleep on an empty stomach\r\n3. Making teachers strike to be illegal is reasonable only if they are paid enough wages to buy a house...remember they can't even afford an RDP!\r\n4. I would like to commend you on your stats....but that's not what teachers take home,,,if 20% of our GDP goes to education, does it mean educators earn that much?...be realistic!\r\n5. Grade R teachers work hard..they are like nannies to your kids while you enjoy the comfort of your swing chair in your office...interestingly they know your kid better than you..and even spend more time with them than you!

R4000 for somebody with a diploma its a big insult n that 7% was another insult to the public servant.

To strike is to do the opposite of what one should normally do - so if they strike during the December holidays, they will be attending classrooms to give lessons to their learners ?!

Probably also gonna burn down school, rape and murder, fit in with your savage barbaric striking brothers and sisters
