On Tuesday afternoon, Anene Booysen’s murder-accused Johannes Kana will know his fate as the Swellendam Circuit court hands down judgment.
Kana is accused of brutally raping and murdering Booysen whose body was found on a construction site in Bredasdorp. Many of her bones had been broken and her intestines were found lying on the ground.
Moments before she died, Anene said she had been attacked by five or six men.
Two men were initially charged for the crime - Kana and Jonathan Davids – but in May charges were dropped against Davids due to insufficient evidence.
During the trial, the court heard evidence from witness including friends, doctors and paramedics. One of the doctors who treated Anene, Elizabeth de Kok, said her injuries were the worst De Kok had ever seen.
A police constable testified in court that he drove his van to the site and shone the headlights on Anene. He found her lying on her back, with her pants pulled down to her knees and her intestines hanging out. Her eyes were swollen shut and she was groaning in pain.
She was transported to Tygerberg Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
