Brits protesters demand water

Mahikeng - Residents have started making their way to the Madibeng municipal offices to protest water shortages there.

This follows violent protests last week during which four people died.

Water to informal settlements such as Mothutlung had been cut off for months.

The protest comes a day after Madibeng’s mayor and two other officials resigned.

12:52 - Cosatu says the woman had to walk half a kilometre to fetch water from the tanks, Lindeque tweeted.

12:50 - Meanwhile, Eyewitness News reporter Mia Lindeque tweets that a 59-year old woman collapsed and died while queuing for water in the Borolelo township almost two weeks ago.

12:23 - Municipality says some roads don't fall under their jurisdiction but they will fix it anyway.

12:12 - Municipality says it will probe claims of councillors owning water trucks and making money from deliveries. 

11:58 - Madibeng Mayor Matshidiso Mangoathe is now addressing the media.

11:39 - Protesters want general service delivery improved and want inefficient officials fired.

11:32 - The Hebron community says the Madibeng municpality has 14 days to respond to its demands.

11:28 - In the memorandum, residents demand that the councillor step down.

11:23 - A community leader has asked protesters to remain calm.

11:17 - Protesters are singing and dancing in front of the municipal offices. People are singing "voetsek!".

11:15 - Marchers have arrived at the municipal offices. 

11:11 - About an hour ago, Beeld reporter Fanie van Rooyen tweeted that about 200 marchers were taking part.

11:04 - Marchers are almost at the municpal offices. They will hand over a memorandum to officials.
