AMIDST the frenzied finish of the 2015 Comrades Ultra Marathon, South African Andrew Maherry was the last person to cross the finish line yesterday afternoon at Pietermaritzburg’s Oval Stadium.
Cheers and backslaps welcomed the runner as he crossed the line on his third Comrades run and was presented with flowers.
The 38-year-old from Gauteng said he was “over the moon” to have finished the race and have made the cut off.
“I am just over the moon. And tired,” he laughed.
The runner said it was a tough race but it would not be his last.
“My eldest son (7) said to me just before this Comrades that he is going to run this race with me one day.”
Maherry said his wife and two sons, who are three and seven, had come from Gauteng to support him and he could not wait to see them.
As disappointed runners who did not make the cut-off time crawled and walked across the finish line, Sam Mzimanzi, who missed the cut-off time by seconds, danced across the finish line.
“I am okay, I am good but I am a little bit sad that I did not make the cut-off time.
“I will be back next year to try again,” said the Pretoria runner.
The first official man to miss the cut-off time, Jan Koort, was carried from the finish line by a stretcher and taken to the medic’s tent.
Comrades Race director Rowyn James said the race went “extremely well” and was pleased with how the day went overall.
