Johannesburg - Three men accused of various crimes in Muldersdrift, on the West Rand, including the murder of a schoolgirl, were sentenced to lengthy prison terms on Thursday, the NPA said on Thursday.

Judge Moses Mavundla sentenced Alfred Zwane, 27, Samson Mandlezi, 23, and Maweni Ubisse, 27, in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, sitting in Palm Ridge, to two life terms and 148 years' imprisonment, regional National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Hurbetin Phindi Louw said.

They were convicted on Wednesday of 18 charges including murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and housebreaking.

The trio, from Diepsloot, were arrested on 14 September 2012, following a spate of attacks by armed men that began on 6 July that year.

On 5 September, Alyssa Botha, 13, was shot dead as she arrived home with her father Anton and sister Megan, 17. Botha was shot in the stomach and Megan in the legs. They were attacked when they got out of their car.

Andre Jordaan, 50, was shot during a robbery and died in hospital.

"The NPA welcomes the sentence and hopes that the victims of these crimes will find solace in the fact that these perpetrators are removed from society," Louw said.
