Lengthy jail terms for Eastern Cape 6

2014-03-29 12:06

Johannesburg - Six men convicted for murder and robbery were sentenced to lengthy jail terms by the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Friday, Eastern Cape police said.

The men were aged between 33 and 40, said police spokesperson Marinda Mills.

Patrick Ntsume was jailed for 33 years, Unathi Wana for 30, Vukile Ngcangisa for 27, Luyanda Njokweni for 25, Madoda Dopla Nube for 23 and Xolani Edward Nanto for six years.

The men, excluding Nanto, were found guilty on six counts of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, illegal possession of firearms and robbery with aggravating circumstances, said Mills.

Nanto was given six years for robbery.

They were arrested in 2011 when police received information about a planned robbery of a bakkie carrying platinum, she said.

"Thirteen men attacked the bakkie and once they realised that police were present they began to fire shots at the members."

Mills said the police shot back and six of the men were killed.

Eastern Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta commended the police for the arrest of the men.

"I would like to commend those members who worked tirelessly to ensure that those who were involved in this crime were exposed."

Stan being poor doesn't give you a license to commit crime now I'm wishing them a nice stay in the slammer and i also hope that they will meet their matches inside there.

I think these sentences are reasonable and that the crims should be counting their blessings that they are still alive considering that 6 of their accomplices died. It is true to say however that their sentences might have been lighter were they not from the previously disadvantaged sector of society. Consider however that they were armed and willing to kill members of the police when challenged and that there is no way of knowing whether these six had killed other people in order to obtain the weapons which might have killed lawabiding citizens going about their daily tasks so a long jail term will remove them from society and hopefully send out a strong message to crims not to use weapons. They WERE disadvantaged 20 years ago but they sure as heck aren't now so why were they committing an armed heist if not for personal gain? As far as Oscar is concerned - yes he killed Reeva (not an intruder) and I think 95% of people feel he deserves what he gets regardless of how rich or whatever he is and also regardless of what colour you happen to be making that judgement. It is a great pity that he wasn't taken off the street long before he was able to use his gun on an innocent person who was not threatening him. 12 years in jail will be long enough for him to learn humility and have anger management rehabilitation etc and even with parole he will never be able to regain the standing and wealth he threw away that night.
