2012-10-30 10:39

Cape Town - Less than a third of South Africans have completed matric, according to the Census 2011 results released on Tuesday.

The results reveal 28.4% of the population completed grade 12, compared to 20.4% in 2001.

The percentage of people who had some form of secondary education grew from 30.2% in 2001 to 33.8% in 2011.

A further breakdown shows 8.6% have not had any schooling at all, compared to 17.9% in 2001.

"There is a relatively high percentage of persons aged 20 years and older with no schooling in Limpopo [17.3%], followed by Mpumalanga (14%)," the census document says.

The Western Cape has the lowest number of persons aged 20 and higher who have not had any form of education (2.7%).

The number of South Africans with a post-matric qualification is 12.1%, an increase from 9.1% in 2001.

"The province with the highest proportion of the population aged 20 years or more with post-grade 12 qualifications is Gauteng [18%], followed by the Western Cape [14.4%]," the document shows.

      moriri.mosweu - 2012-10-30 11:09

This picture should be emailed to Tokyo, Motsepe, Ramaphosa and the other fat cats. These sorts of things interest them.

      sanda.mnyazi - 2012-10-30 11:35

      This is disturbing....

      jack.blacking.56 - 2012-10-30 12:01

......and they wonder why whites earn 6 X more than blacks/

      sanda.mnyazi - 2012-10-30 12:38

So jack in your mind you have already concluded that that 2/3 are only black people......typical

      letitia.weber.5 - 2012-10-30 14:39

      The picture explains all......

      moriri.mosweu - 2012-10-30 16:45

Jack.ass, I was not aware that all whites have a matric. Certainly not some of who I have employed.

  • Pete7930 - 2012-10-30 10:48

And this is why BEE appointments are a failure!

      sanda.mnyazi - 2012-10-30 11:36

And in this case you will not hear white people saying the figures are crooked......

      george.outremer - 2012-10-30 11:42

@sanda - this calls to mind whether comrade zuma is educated. Read here: http://www.iol.co.za/sundayindependent/is-jacob-zuma-educated-or-not-1.1268107#.UI-gs2-HeSo

      alfred.neumann.142 - 2012-10-30 12:27

No Sanda, you won't. But you'll still hear mouth breathers like you blaming them for your own idiocy.

      sanda.mnyazi - 2012-10-30 12:30

And Zuma is a third of South Africa? stupid comment really

      sanda.mnyazi - 2012-10-30 12:40

Alfred i swear to God no one was going to notice if you commented or not

      george.outremer - 2012-10-30 12:47

Sanda - Stupid comment, really? Think man! If the president is uneducated, it follows that he does not appreciate the need to educate his own people. The textbook scandal, abysmal matric pass-rate record, and the lowering of the education system are cases in point. It is by keeping people uneducated and downtrodden that the likes of Zuma can stay in power. But, hey: ignorance is bliss!

      talana.malherbe - 2012-10-30 13:53

@sanda.mnyazi, no I won't say its crooked, I say its scary and a shame. I am white but I want to be part of building this country and nation with my fellow citizens, irrespective of their colour. I feel sorry for those who are deprived of a proper education because the government and ANC have been promising these things for many years and people are still voting for them. I feel sorry for the people still believing the lying and empty promises because government and ANC are robbing them of a proper future.

  • issa.kabudula - 2012-10-30 10:53

This is disaster - if all of us we take this report for granted we must think again. For this country to develop we want girls & boys who are well informed and that will depend on our youth's education.

      tokkiel - 2012-10-30 11:36

Ja they must stop running after Malema and go to school. They are listening to a uneducated fool. Thats why there is no future for this country.

  • mick.puzone - 2012-10-30 10:54

but who counted these figure people without matrics

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-10-30 12:12

I think this time the computers counted it, let us hope it was filled in correctly.

  • Jeremy - 2012-10-30 10:56

Well at least the figures are moving in the right direction. But, until the percentages of all race groups getting matric are equal, there'll continue to be disparities in income between race groups.....

  • karlu.unos - 2012-10-30 10:56

Most boertjies dont go to school or even finish matric

      alan.gernet - 2012-10-30 11:21

true Karlou - they are clever enough to pass the 'official adjusted matric' without even going to school

      tokkiel - 2012-10-30 11:39

Jip thats why we were to stupid to steal the countries money. because we were not educated enough. lmao

      andrez.kolesky - 2012-10-30 11:42

@karl.anus. No comment, your name says it all.

      johny.stront - 2012-10-30 11:47

But still we are clever enough to generate a good living. So F u ok.

      frans.vanderpoll - 2012-10-30 12:08

Karl Anus, for this comment you deserve about a thousand plus up fingers! Middle fingers that is you ignorant as*h*le!!

      andrez.kolesky - 2012-10-30 12:29

@johny. Jy vat glad nie "stront" nie. HA !!!!!

      letitia.weber.5 - 2012-10-30 14:50

@Anus, maybe that's because you black people are also with us in the schools and steel all our books and stationary so that we're not able to do anything, but also think about it, we don't need much education to be clever because we are already clever enough with or without matric.....

  • marius.vanwyk.5621 - 2012-10-30 10:58

And that is why whites earn 6 times more. Not because of our skin color. Thanks for not delivering books in time ANC.....

  • gary.desousa.7 - 2012-10-30 11:12

If a third of pupils do not have matric for what ever reason and the quality of the matric is the lowest in most of Africa what hope that the children will ever rise to educated past the twitter level.

  • lee.bromley.39 - 2012-10-30 11:14

Less than a third of South Africans have Matric, but let's hate all the white people for having money and jobs. Blame the ANC, not me.

      alan.gernet - 2012-10-30 11:23

Yip - the money one earns is in proportion to one's productivity and education. (Unless you 'arrange' BEE Tenders for yourself .. in which case - the money one earns is about 12 ties what your worth is.

      alan.gernet - 2012-10-30 11:28

      ties = times

  • gordon.turner.37 - 2012-10-30 11:15

Now why doesn't News24 add this to the pay disparity article and possible get an half brained journo that can link the data into something meaning-full. EDUCATION is real disaster.

  • andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-10-30 11:16

Matric in itself does not mean much in SA. I know many so-called matriculants who cannot spell to save their life and who cannot multiply 10 by 10 without using an electronic calculator!

      alan.gernet - 2012-10-30 11:24

well - the matric results are manipulated in accordance with the Dept. Eduction's targets ... doesnt make the pupils bright or productive though.

  • zimbobwe.mugabe - 2012-10-30 11:21

Tenders is the new way of life. It has replaced cash heist, hijacking and robbery. I know most of the former jail-birds with nothing between their ears are getting tenders because they can speak louder and gibberish in rallies and meeting just like fatboy.

  • auntie.lebo - 2012-10-30 11:21

    That includes our president

  • richard.bosmano - 2012-10-30 11:35

Perhaps the franchise should be limited to those who have a matric. Not that the current matric proves intelligence

  • vincent.meiring.7 - 2012-10-30 11:39

O well, let's start at the governing party. How many of them have qualifications. They and their alliances, mostly uneducated, is not good examples for our kids, aren't they??? That's what they call, lead by example. History in future will surely slam the governing party, as sinking the South African economy, not only with their corruption, but also with their inability to create an educated, diciplined generation.

  • maria.ferreira1234 - 2012-10-30 11:41

Maybe so... but amazingly they hold responsible positions and have no matric. There are a lot of fake matric certificates around. Who is to blame ? Not the whites again I hope...

  • sisie.indola - 2012-10-30 11:42

And that is something to brag about - i don't think so. So where do they come asking for these exorbitant salaries. I am educated and i earn R10,000 a month for which i pay rent, electricity, water, petrol, food and everything else that goes with just living. So when the hordes start rioting i get extremely woes - and what gives them the right to ask for such - oh please keep your thoughts to yourself about how dangerous it is, that is a cop out and an excuse - i don't care if they have to drill holes (that's right they drill holes of which the foreman has told them where) they do nothing other than stand there holding a drill, or maybe a shovel to shovel up the rocks - gee that is rocket science.

      sarah.bouttell - 2012-10-30 11:56

Agreed - I don't think these figures are anywhere near where we need them to be. Our country will continue to be a mess, and our people will continue to starve, unless we can educated them and give them a fighting chance at finding a decent job and feeding themselves. The state and level of education in our country is a disgrace, and the fact that Angie Motshega is being sabotaged from within her own party is a sad reflection on what the government's end game really is.

      sarah.bouttell - 2012-10-30 11:57

      *educate* (epic fail)

      lerato.khoza.568 - 2012-10-30 14:29

Pity the remaining educated &graduates are still unemployed, some earning peanuts,Mpumalanga and Limpopo must be taken serious. as a result our brothers and sisters after tertiary in big cities they dont come back due to lack of job opportunities and resources to empower young people. Government is the biggest employer but 1.2 % solely working for government. Come elections the two Mpumalanga and Limpopo are the best provinces.Wake up call, we are fedup and when youth unite problems occurs and freedom restores.

  • azwi.sadiki - 2012-10-30 11:54

Lets encourage our fellow bradas and sisters to take education serious, wether dey nt as good at school or dey have kids or problems of any nature, lets be responsible for the close friends around us and push dem for the better of our country life and deirs aswell as deir families. freedom is too high for a fool, lets give them de keys to be spiritually physically and emotionally free, now dats freedom.

  • rob.bayliss.94 - 2012-10-30 11:55

Looks like the CULTURAL REVOLUTION is on track in SA. With a majority of the voting population virtually uneducated all that is required now is to adjust the extant European standards further down to meet local Africa needs, consequently ensuring that the majority obtain university degrees. Then the anc can claim that the alien requirements imposed on poor subjected Africans have been addressed and SA education has been corrected to reflect the true culture of its citizens. In due course of time this will result in massive opportunities for contracted expertise from other countries....will they come from the East, the Middle East, or the West. Anyone care to take a guess?

  • dewald.galjaard - 2012-10-30 12:39

  • coontly - 2012-10-30 12:41

  • tafkad.tafkad - 2012-10-30 13:00

and the quality of the average current matriculant isn't close to that of pupils passing standard 5 in 1994.

  • tshoarelom1 - 2012-10-30 13:39

Even those who had acces to that education it is not quality education.

  • talana.malherbe - 2012-10-30 13:49

The Matric Certificate of today isn't worth wrapping fish ,lining parrot cages or wiping ur butt with. However most South Africans whether Black,White,Green, striped or spotted are just arrogant, dense, moronic American wannabe's anyway so it doesn't matter..............bottom line.

  • lynne.barker.7 - 2012-10-30 14:34

  • lynne.barker.7 - 2012-10-30 14:38

  • mikel.kiparski - 2012-10-30 15:46

a third with matric is very good since half are too young to be in matric therefore only 18% dont have matric THEY CAN ALWAYS STILL WRITE IT....i think there is something amiss with these statistics ....

Why? No teachers and text books. Simple.

  • sachasea - 2012-10-30 17:16

What are the children's chances of receiving a decent quality education, whith SA ranking 143rd out of 144 countries in terms of quality of education delivery ? In the provinces, like Limpopo, with their corruption, Zanu-PF mentality of nationalisation for personal gain, - they are run like independent pariah states with no answerability to central government or the people they claim to represent........cant even deliver textbook to these children who will be doomed to poverty and unemployment as a result of a below-par education system....this is the biggest single failure of government in SA today ....Cry the Beloved Country...Cry the Beloved Children ...

  • danyalkolbe - 2012-10-30 19:58

You have to bear in mind that this figure is only as high as it is because of the lower passing grades needed to pass-post 1994.

  • thato.kgole.104 - 2012-11-03 10:36

after almost 20 years of liberation, you just want to ask where the interventions are to mitigate the lifetimes of academic exclusion the majority had suffered. yes some work has been done, but hardly enough

  • digger.dighead - 2012-11-05 23:56

This is a disgrace...that in a new SA there are children having to go to such a school. The government and their buddies will sit and blame whites and insult us for being productive. (Because we as parents have spent a fortune on education). They will openly declare their hatred because we are way more advance as them...yet they will rather line their pockets then use tax payers’ money to give these kids a proper education and chance in life. Pathetic.
