Let girls choose their future, says Zuma

2012-10-11 15:58

Johannesburg - Girls have the right to take charge of their futures, President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.

"Young children must have a right to decide their own future," he said in a statement on International Day of the Girl Child.

"It is through education that we can help to empower them, so that they can make their own independent decisions on the lives that they want to lead."

Zuma urged the government, civil society, and families to help nurture young girls to realise their full potential and have prosperous futures. This included ensuring they received an education.

"When children drop out of school early, it often leads to teenage pregnancies and life-threatening risks such as HIV infections and other sexual and reproductive diseases, which prevents them from fulfilling their dreams.

"In most instances it also prevents these young girls from breaking from a cycle of poverty that they have become entrenched in."

The United Nations last year declared 11 October International Day of the Girl Child.

The theme of the event this year was the problem of early child marriages, the presidency said. Sapa

We don't need your permission or endorsement, Mr Zuma... we decide our own future regardless

      jeanne.botha.3 - 2012-10-11 16:18

Was he not spewing some hog wash the other day about unmarried women being a social ill. That they should all be married and mothers to get the "extra training"?

      chikunga - 2012-10-11 16:19

n this time he didnt say anything cANCerous but still people are chiding him. Speak about honest n racism or lack of

      I want to puke....... - 2012-10-11 19:29

How can my 3 year old daughter one day decide about her future, when there are so many (black and white) people who currently have no future in this corrupted country that you rule??

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-10-11 21:59

Are the words 'future' and 'the president's genitals' the same?

      kseyffert - 2012-10-12 10:17

Jenny, you are right, WE don't need his permission, however, Many young girls out there DO need people like him to take a public stand of this nature. Don't get me wrong, I think our PM is not too bright (getting caught in the shower after doing his cousin without a condom knowing she is HIV positive is all the proof I need) he is our PM and he is influential within his community. We do need more taking his stand. One query I do have though, dropouts ending up in teen pregnancies seems wrong. I think most dropouts area a result of teen pregnancies.

Nobody will have a prosperous future in this country while cANCer and especially you, you illiterate halfwit, is around!

      desertratbkf - 2012-10-11 16:07

Oh sorry! Forgot to mention, CRIMINAL!

      desertratbkf - 2012-10-11 16:59

I also have a very good life here! We're lucky. But millions upon millions dont! Pull your head out of your ahole and check out reality! Its the majority of poor people Im talking about! NOTHING is being done to help these disadvantaged people!@ Get real ringer!

      desertratbkf - 2012-10-11 17:39

So where's your big mouth now? Oh realised Im actually right? Well thats settled then!

      claudia.meads - 2012-10-11 23:03

smalefane, How about I buy you a one way 'walking' ticket to Zimbabwe - ie you leave the same way your ancestors arrived here? For the reality is that the last chance that SA had of ever having a prosperous future was dealt its first blow on 6 June 1976, the second blow in 1994, the death-knell in Polokwane 2007... The primitive sex-crazed buffoon you call a (supposed) president, I have to ask - what "choice" did he give to a young woman while he was taking a 'shower to wash the AIDS off' - your kind makes any civilized being too sick for words...

  • tshifhiwa.vandermunalisi - 2012-10-11 16:14

How do they choose their future while you are busy looting all the money that can be used to make their life better through education and other training Mr. Rapist??

  • denise.herbst.5 - 2012-10-11 16:23

Got nothing to say on the actual current issues - only nice flowery speeches which we all know he does not mean because he has no respect for women! This type of rubbish reminds me of George Bush jr! Mr Zuma, how about addressing unpopular hard issues and giving us all some clarity instead of this BS politicking!

  • arno.walt - 2012-10-11 16:30

Should read: Let girls choose their future, with Zuma.

  • evert.potgieter.16 - 2012-10-11 16:46

"I know that people today think being single is nice. It's actually not right. That's a distortion. You've got to have kids. Kids are important to a woman because they actually give an extra training to a woman, to be a mother." - Jacob Zuma Mixed-Messages-R-Us

  • sphala - 2012-10-11 16:56

Arg shame....wise but hope you don't try to score point for second term.

  • Mack Olehile - 2012-10-11 17:04

  • crracker.crackerr - 2012-10-11 17:16

He clearly does not understand how little his speeches/utterancs make an impression. Something very wrong. - 2012-10-12 08:17

Actually they do - a very poor impression. Just opens his mouth to change feet.

  • Rhulani Coleman Mkhwanazi - 2012-10-11 17:23

My white buddy cannot be politicians, they always comment racially and out of order. I am DA guru but they are making me changing my mind now. However Zuma must go to hell.

  • Tebz001 - 2012-10-11 17:24

having unprotected sex with a woman then taking a shower after wards and not doing anything about the education crisis of the young girls in limpopo helps!!\r\nThank u Zuma for the examples.

      neo.motsepe - 2012-10-11 17:27

      Thank you!

      musawenkosi.zwane.54 - 2012-10-11 17:55

Dude isn't that the past? Every person learn from mistakes. The limpopo thing blame the friends of of malema example vice president \mr silence\

      Tebz001 - 2012-10-12 09:42

Friends of malema are not presidents of the country. They don't have the power to discipline education ministers that are not doing their jobs.

  • gneralle.edon - 2012-10-11 18:29

    wat a jerk!!!

  • gneralle.edon - 2012-10-11 18:29

*hat off for yo Sir! Wht abt khoza's daughter????

  • james.hurley.1401 - 2012-10-11 19:43

Zuma is the biggest hypocrite - what about the children he fathers with his friends daughters. I suppose he'll give them a house at Nkandla too? Neither Zuma nor Malema are options for this country. Kgalema maybe? Even better, Thuli. Now there's someone with integrity.

  • Giyani Thomas - 2012-10-11 21:07

only if the ruling party can do away with child support grant, then child pregnancy and aids virus will be a thing of the past.

  • cliff.slabbert - 2012-10-11 21:49

  • hein.huyser - 2012-10-11 21:49

This coming from a man who denegrates woman rights every day. It must be the most humiliating experience to share your husband with multiple woman. Some he never even marry. No lessons in that department from you Mr JZ, not now, not ever

  • lynn.syme.1 - 2012-10-12 01:30

Dear president of the masses. Please go and speak to YOUR people. OUR people seem to be doing just fine. It's totally pointless having your speech printed online since the people you need to reach are totally illiterate and probably don't have access to the internet. Yours sincerely - An educated women with an educated daughter.
