As told by Lizel du Randt, Lika’s mother:

When she was nine weeks old, my daughter Lika was diagnosed with Total Aplastic Anaemia, a bone marrow condition. At the age of two she was transferred to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town to undergo a bone marrow transplant.

Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the medical team, her little body rejected the transplant and started failing, swelling up to almost twice its normal size from water retention.

The staff at the Red Cross Children's Hospital were immensely caring and went out of their way to make her as comfortable as possible. Twenty-four hours a day, they did what they could to keep our little girl’s spirits up. Tough as this time was, we remember Lika often laughing and trying to joke around.

Lika passed away peacefully with Amazing Grace playing softly in the background. We will forever be grateful to the doctors and nurses of the Red Cross for going to such great lengths to ensure her short life on earth was as comfortable and surrounded by love as it could be.
