Polokwane - The ANC in Limpopo has suspended their embattled speaker in the provincial legislature, Merriam Ramadwa, pending disciplinary action.

This after Ramadwa allegedly repeatedly ignored calls by Premier Stan Mathabatha and the ANC provincial executive to step down as Speaker.

ANC provincial secretary Knocks Seabi announced the decision on Monday.

Seabi said Ramadwa was served with the notice of suspension on Saturday.

"The ANC in Limpopo has taken a decision to temporarily suspend the membership of comrade Merriam Ramadwa as a member of the ANC, pending the outcome of her disciplinary hearing," said Seabi.

"The reasons for suspension and instituting disciplinary proceedings against comrade Ramadwa are detailed in her letter of suspension, which remains privileged information between the ANC and her."

Ramadwa was appointed by Luthuli House shortly after the May 2014 elections.

She had been at loggerheads with ANC leaders, after it surfaced that Mathabatha ordered that she should resign and make way for Polly Boshielo.

Boshielo was a member of the national Parliament and was recalled two months ago.

She joined the legislature after she successfully swapped seats with former ANC provincial secretary Joe Maswanganyi.
