Limpopo clerk in court for fraud

Johannesburg - A Limpopo municipal clerk accused of fraud was granted R10 000 bail by the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court, police said on Thursday.

Sandani Isaac Mathivha, 49, a deeds office clerk in the Thulamela municipality, was allegedly trying to sell municipal land, Colonel Ronel Otto said in a statement.

A buyer had already paid him R41 000, out of a total of R70 000 Mathivha allegedly charged him for the stand.

The victim became suspicious when Mathivha demanded the balance before issuing the title deed.

He was arrested at his tavern in Mavambe village, outside Thohoyandou. His case was postponed to 12 December.

In August advocate Erick Matlou, who owned a law firm in Thohoyandou, was arrested by the Hawks after he allegedly defrauded a businessman of R215,000 after promising him two stands.

It would be interesting to see how much land the state has lost over the years with these kind of dodgy deals. There are probably thousands of hectares of land that have been "sold".
