Johannesburg - A man appeared briefly in the Bolobedu Magistrate's Court on Monday in connection with the rape of his 82-year-old grandmother, Limpopo police said.

The man, 27, would appear in court again next Monday, when he was expected to bring a formal bail application, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

The man, who lived with his grandmother, allegedly demanded the key to the house and she tossed it under the door.

He allegedly forced his way into the house, throttled her and then raped her.

She was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
