Johannesburg - A man was injured when he was attacked in Thohoyandou near Musina on Thursday by a mob accusing him of attempted robbery, Limpopo police said.

Police arrested the man after rescuing him from the mob, Major Mashudu Malelo said.

He and another man were trying to rob a supermarket at gunpoint, but shoppers alerted other community members who pounced on the pair.

“We have arrested one suspect with an unlicensed firearm, he was already injured. The community members beat him viciously after he started firing at them.”

The second man managed to escape.

Malelo said a man was shot in the leg when the two men fired randomly in a desperate attempt to get away from the mob.

Police thanked the community for their help, but warned they should not take law into their own hands.

The arrested man would appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court as soon as he was declared fit to stand trial by doctors, Malelo said.

I was there but unfortunately I arrived very late but I saw the man who was shot bleeding profusely sitting down surrounded by community members. I was surprised there were no police officers and it took them more than 30 mins to arrive at the crime scene when they are just 500m away. The man was arrested by the community and police came into his rescue when the community was working on him and they should have let the community to blow off his brains with his own gun. The unarmed public was so brave to face these armed men. I am still surprised why SAPS are telling the public not to take the law into their hands but i think they were defending themselves against these desperadoes. For your info Mr editor, Thohoyandou is no where close to Musina.

I agree the public was extremely brave, in any other country everyone would have been cowering on the floor but the brave people of Thohoyandou stood their ground and fought for good. These are the real South Africans (these are the people we need to be judged by not by our politicians, celebraties and sports stars)...secondly, not many Gautengers know Venda so I think saying that Thohoyandou is near Musina is not extremely misleading, I would have said near to the Holy Forest...but my friends have never heard of the Holy Forest.
