Limpopo police seize 608 firearms

Johannesburg - More than 600 people have been declared unfit to possess firearms in Limpopo, police said on Wednesday.

This has resulted in 608 firearms being seized, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

"The escalating number of people owning firearms was becoming a headache for the police because those firearms were being used to commit crimes," Mulaudzi said.

The police embarked on operations to clampdown on the misuse and illegal possession of firearms on October 1 this year,

"Most of the firearms seized were domestic violence-related... and the licences to possess firearms were withdrawn."

Mulaudzi said more operations were planned for the festive season.

Why on earth do you issue these licenses, to incompetent people, in the first place?

Incompetence breeds Incompetence Look at the 2 previous police chiefs and tell me they were the only Fudge Buckets in the Police.

How many illegal guns did you recover?

      Poloyatonki - 2011-12-14 14:16

To me it sounds like they are disarming the law abiding citizens. They are too scared to disarm criminals.

Polly This time I agree with you, fully

Please clean up the farms as well. Some farmers don't deserve to own firearms.

How are they going to protect them selves when armed robbers want to kill them ? The criminals need to have their fire arms taken away , not the victims ! Damn the man.

@Azande your comments are so one sided take away everyone's guns then we fight it out with fists what you say? or even better not fight at all...

You dont deserve the right to vote.

I guess you are actually after the farms, aren't you Azande. What sort of farm would you like to invade (from a dis-armed Farmer)? Perhaps a CHOP farm...

A policeman guilty of shooting a mother in front of her little boy, policeman take turns raping a young woman, today a policeman attacks and robs a crippled, homeless man of his christmas gift. Seems to me the people most untrustworthy of carrying guns are the cops.

I really hope it is not just a case of declaring people unfit to get the stats right. A few years ago the police were just rejecting applications for licenses, all with the same reason of "the need to own a firearm was not justified" and then issuing the licenses once you appealed - indicaing a deliberate process of frustrating applicants. If these 608 weapons were really confiscated to prevent crime, I applaud the police, but experience has shown us that it is probably not the case.
