Polokwane - Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale has been booked off for a week after being involved in a car accident, his office said on Friday.

Spokesperson Mashadi Mathosa said he was discharged in the morning from the Polokwane Mediclinic, where he was treated for injuries following Thursday's accident.

"The premier is recovering well, but has stitches in his right ear from minor injuries he sustained when his car overturned at Gasekgopo Village, on his way from Tzaneen to Polokwane on Thursday afternoon," Mathosa said.

Mathale's driver, who was admitted to the same hospital, was treated and discharged on the same day. Mathosa said she was not sure what type of car the premier was in.

Democratic Alliance leader in the province Desiree van der Walt wished Mathale a speedy recovery.

ANC provincial spokesperson Makhondelale Mathiba said: "Our chairperson is recovering well from the minor injuries and remains in high spirits."

The province's transport department is expected to unveil its Easter Arrive Alive campaign on the N1 outside Polokwane on Tuesday.

The driver was adjusting his blue light , instead of paying attention to the road.

No he crossed a red robot and thats what caused the crash.

Two in car.. two survivors.. What a bloody pity!

It must be the poor quality of the roads...

Shows you what adjusting a blue light at speed and then hitting a pot hole can do. Throw in a couple of Johnnie Walker's and there's your answer. Pity Mathale lives another day to steal some more.

@ Irene.. Well said.. wish I could give you a dozen thumbs up!

This is very amusing. They are about to unveil the Easter Arrive Alive campaign and the premier rolls his car and gets on his ear. Booked off so he can have a nice Easter Holiday. On a more serious note : The public has full right to know exactly what happened and what disciplinary steps were taken. A car does not just roll on its own. The driver is responsible for all damages to the vehicle.

Did he run into the gravy train?

A week off for 2 stitches in his ear? Is this guy an ANC idiot as well as a poefter. The true story: He had one of his "sisters" in the back of the car with him. They were jawing away and in the course of the accident his weenie got bitten off. The 2 stitches were used to sew it back on!

Methinks you are hot on the trail, Inspector. It was when the driver turned around to take pictures with his cell phone...
