Johannesburg - Twenty people have been arrested amid the weekend service delivery protests in villages around Maake, Limpopo, police said on Sunday.

The group would face charges connected to looting.

"The suspects were arrested after they were found to be in possession of the suspected stolen items and they are due to appear in the Maake Magistrates' Court on Monday," said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

Police recovered thousands of rands and groceries, furniture, building material and electrical goods which were looted from foreign shop owners during the protests.

Acting provincial commissioner, Major-General Berning Ntlemeza said the arrests of some of the suspects stemmed from tip-offs from community members.

"The co-operation that we received from members of the community is a clear indication that not everybody is involved in these abhorrent criminal acts and that they are striving for a peaceful and crime free society," he said.

He called on the public to help the police in making more arrests.

Service delivery protests in Maake began on Thursday.

Police were still monitoring the area on Sunday.
