Johannesburg - Hundreds of homes were affected by heavy winds and rain in Limpopo last week, a preliminary report has found.

The Limpopo provincial disaster management centre said 134 families were affected in sixteen villages in the Mopani district.

"To date five tents and eight food parcels were provided to affected families at Guwela village," it said in a statement.

In the Vhembe district 458 households were affected.

"The Capricorn district has reported 40 households, three schools and a nurses' home were affected in the Blouberg local municipality.

The Sekhukhune district had 293 affected households in the Makhuduthamaga, Fetakgomo, Greater Tubatse and Elias Motsoaledi municipalities.

"Fetakgomo has provided four emergency tents and mattresses to affected families, while Makhuduthamaga has provided one tent, three temporary shelters, fourteen blankets and sponges to all affected villages within its locality."

It said the statement was based on the preliminary reports received.

"Some affected households have recovered from these incidents," it said.

"All affected districts are working around the clock to ensure that final reports are submitted."
