Lobster raid: Firm says sorry to media

Johannesburg - Fruit & Veg City Holdings apologised to media on Friday after one of its store managers locked journalists in a coldroom during a raid in Sandton by the department of agriculture.

"Fruit & Veg City Holdings confirm news reports that media was today detained in a cold storage area of a franchised Food Lover’s Market store," the company's chief executive Brian Coppin said in a statement.

He said an invitation to the media was never relayed to the store owner, Ben Rubin.

"He [Rubin] reacted in an understandably aggressive manner when he found a contingent of media in the cold storage area as he had not given them permission to be there.

"However, the aggression showed was inexcusable and we apologise to the media involved."

The department said the store was selling undersized rock lobsters which were found to be below the legal size of 7.5cm.

Coppin said his company had dealt with the matter and that their supplier had already been fined R50 000.

In addition to this, Rubin's franchise would be fined R5 000. He said his company saw it important to root out the sale of all red-listed fish and hold all suppliers, managers and franchisees accountable for any red-listed seafood on their premises.

Proceeds from fines levied against franchisees and suppliers found guilty would be donated Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) or the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), said Coppin.

Really, just upset because of their presence? Then why would he tell them to delete the evidence? He tried to cover his criminal activities. Boikot this outlet.

"Pick and Pay salutes you, they do because they care"..... (Pick and Pay own Fruit and Veg Holdings)..... Pick and Pay must have started employing ANC cadres to handle media relations....... and just like the ANC PnP really don't give a f%#k..... just go and stand in a cue,its like dealing with the dept of home affairs......

I think you'll find that they're NOT owned by P+P however, they run on a par for disgusting consumer attitudes. Neither deserve to be in business but the SA customer base is so used to bad service and being Fu*ked over by monopolies that they no longer even bother to complain anymore!

      Ian - 2012-07-07 07:17

then explain why is food lovers produce and meat so fresh and yummy and p&p so rotten or unfit for human consumption, I am tired of wasting money on p&p and there vrot food and lets not even get started on there attitude, that stinks too

Beeld should do an investigation into the quality of food in certain pick and pay stores, just look on hello peter at the complaints regarding rotten food and expiry dates. I now do my shopping only at food lovers but the issue on over sized lobsters is a huge no no.

      gregory.wellsclifton - 2012-07-07 07:40

You do mean undersized? I wish I could buy 'oversized' at R50 each lol. But yes, you're right regarding P 'n P, and their attitude stinks often. Re- this - R50k fine to supplier and R5k to the franchisee? C'mon!

      Ian - 2012-07-07 07:56

@gregory, apologies, I meant undersized, I cannot shop at p&p any longer, food lovers is a whole new experience for me, as you said its not just there rotten food, the way they treat customers is a real shocker, I would rather travel the extra distance than leave p&p in a bad mood

For the treatment of the journos. The bloody store should be closed down and the savage responsible jailed. You don't lock any living being in a cold room!
